It was time for bed. I went into the room and I shut the door behind me. I leaned against the door as I slowly looked around the room, scanning carefully as I tried to x-ray every nook and cranny.
I was in for the night and I did not want any of them in with me. I saw nothing until my scan was almost complete and then I saw him!

It takes me a while to get comfortable. I twist and turn and adjust and readjust my pillows and blanket as I search for that magic spot... and as I find it, I start to hear a sound. First it is faint ,off in the distance somewhere. I tried to ignore it as I kept my eyes glued shut. It was starting to get closer, that knowing buzzing, and then he was right there. I could feel the buzzing as he made dive like, seemingly sporadic, movements toward my face. My body jerked unconsciously as I tried very unsuccessfully to kill him as he flew away!
I lay there with my eyes still shut, my body tense, trying to hear that sound! Then I started to worry... can he bite me through my pajamas? What about my feet? I don't like having them covered. I just knew he was going to eat them alive. I started to get itchy in places... not because anything had bite me but because of the anticipation of the bite!
I charged out of bed and flicked on the light. I stood my back pressed against the door as I did not want him to have any advantage... it would be a fight unto death.
The minutes passed away and still nothing. I decided to coax him out so I took a few steps around the room, shaking the curtains lightly, tapping things, and moving the air trying to see him exposed. I returned to my spot against the door and then out of the corner of my eye I saw him coming, like a dive bomber toward the target, he hits my face, my hands go up shielding myself from his blood sucking mouth parts. I felt defeated as I know he had no problem ducking and flying off into the light and away from my piercing gaze.
I was fading fast and really wanted to sleep but I persisted... for a few minutes and then with a last knowing glance I turned out the light and slid back into my bed. I laid their expecting to have him strike at any moment with an attack. I was tense! I started to relax and focus on sleeping and of course, those masters of stealth, that is when he came. It was like a blitz attack as I did not hear him from afar. It was like it was right inside my ear! My arms flailed and my feet kicked as I pleaded with him in my head “LEAVE ME ALONE!” I did not long to wait for the second attack as he dove again... I flew out of bed, light on, me crouched and ready to fight. I did not have to wait long this time as he tauntingly flew lazily around the room, just high enough to not be within my grasp...
He landed on the curtain and as I came in for the kill (with a flip flop in hand) he quickly got up and flew to the other side of the curtain... I tried more slowly the second time but it as if he laughed at me and flew across the room too high for my grasp.
I went back to my station at the door and waited, watched knowing he would come.
The final battle lines were drawn he tried to sneak in coming in close to my legs. Fortunately for me, it was also on the side that I held the flip flop ready and waiting to strike. I quickly flipped my wrist as I worked to pin him between flip flop and desk. I smiled triumphantly, but as I turned to look for the proof of the deed done I saw nothing.
I sighed in tiredness and frustration and my eyes scanned again. I was determined not to give up. 5 minutes I waited... 10 minutes I waited and nothing.
Was it possible that I had WON.... that his body lay lifeless not on the flip flop but perhaps on the ground... had I injured him leaving him helpless and lost. Oh, how I hoped!
The light went out and I crawled nervously back under the covers. I lay tense for a while waiting, listening, not daring to hope.... but as my body drifted off to a land of dreams I am sure I smiled in triumph.
