After a very long and basically uneventful train ride I have made it to the Ukriane.
At the train station the frist thing I tried to do was buy my ticket. I had been hoping that it would be as easy as it was in Warsaw... new country, new rules.
The lady laughed at me and kept saying Roosky, Roosky... Russian, Russian. A near by Ukranian heard and came to my rescue. She asked the lady for my ticket and then she informed me that there is no train and to come back later. I was a little confused but I decided that the best thing to do was to make my way to the YWAM base and see if I could get some help from there...
Since then all has been well, though I still do not have a ticket 2 days on. I have found someone who will come with me to buy one.
The Base here is a house boat. It is very cute. All the staff live off base in the community and all the ministries are run off base as well... as far as I can tell atleast. So on base there is not a whole lot of activit though people come and go for meetings and there is a reception and accounts and all that.
The ministry I am hoping to work with when I am in the Ukraine is called Key of Hope. They work with Orphans... children and teenagers, there is another ministry on base who works with babies. One of the many things Key of Hope is involved with is transition care for orphans. The orphans have to leave the orphanage around 16 years and ther are not a whole lot of options and they don't have a lot of training... here are some stats from their website
73% will not find work
70% of boys will be involved in crime.
60% of girls become prostitutes.
10% commit suicide before their 18th birthday.
you can see that there is a real need in this area. It is something I am looking forward to being apart of when I am in Kyiv.
Bye for now
