Here is the 2nd part of the story...
I was a little scared that the man would come back. He told me not to worry about it, that we would be fine. He started to look for another place, another staircase though. I so did not want to leave but perhaps it was necessary. We were going to have to find something where we could stay with the baby.
I went early in the morning the next time with my friend, in hopes that they would both be there. I was right. He was not happy with me about bothering them. He insisted that they were fine and doing nothing wrong. When he calmed down, I just stated very simply that if they were open that we have a place where they can live.
I grasped his arm. Did he really say that he had a place where we could live. I did not even know his name but for some reason at that point it did not even matter. All that mattered was our baby. I knew, he knew that we would not be able to keep our baby while living under the stairs.
They were silent for a while as they looked at each other and then back to me. They introduced themselves then and said that they were listening. I knew they were suspicious. What kind of a man walks up to strangers and says I have a home for you, come with me. I explained that I was a follower of Jesus Christ and because of that I try to help people who need help.
Not all of it made sense to us but I really did not care. He explained about his relationship with God and that being why…etc..etc..etc. We listened and asked him to come back the next day saying that we needed to think about it. We talked it over and decided to give it a try, thinking that we could at least try it. If we wanted to leave we could. The man did say that, we could leave if we didn’t like it.
I came the next day and they were there waiting outside the door for me. All their things were packed up. I helped them get in and it was basically silent until we got to the rehab center. I went over a few house rules with them as we entered. They just looked a little shocked, like they were walking in a dream.
It was like a dream. As we drove up to this house and then were introduced to everyone. There were a lot of people but they seemed nice. There were a lot of rules but that was ok. He was also told he could work and make money and that was really good news. We unpacked a little and sat down for supper, I was warm, I was inside a real home for the first time in 6 months.
I watched them as they ate knowing that this was really just the beginning of a journey for them. There were still a lot of questions that were unanswered. I hoped though that they were beginning to see that we were willing to help them and that we wanted support them through it all.
